Over the weekend I attended the Vietnamese Full Moon Festival in Cabramatta, with the 2008 Liberal Candidate for the seat, Dai Le. It was fantastic and refreshing to see the great cultural diversity that exists in this area. It demonstrates that Australians do truly come from all multiplicity of backgrounds- and that is what makes us a dynamic society.
Had great pho lunch with husband David and daughter Alice, bought lots of Vietnamese goodies and then stood on Dai Le`s stall. The response was amazing.
I am old enough to remember the Vietnam war, and the Whitlam Government`s refusal to accept refugees from Vietnam because they were critics of communism. It was outrageous- we had fought beside them and now we were turning them away.
Fortunately the Liberals won the federal elections in a land slide in 1975 and Malcolm Fraser welcomed the boat people, as they were then called. The ALP is ashamed of this now and has worked hard to change the story, but that is the truth. It`s one of the reasons I am a Liberal today.
We are very lucky to have such aspirational and hard working immigrants and our country is the better for them. Unfortunately many of them have been tricked into voting Labor when their philosophical disposition is actually Liberal, but I am sure that is changing.
What we need is a statue to Malcolm Fraser in the heart of Cabramatta! Let`s go for it!
In the October 18, 2008 by-election in Cabramatta, Dai Le was successful in drawing a large swing towards the Liberal Party. It was unfortunate the Dai couldn`t get over the mark. However, given the large swing towards the Liberal Party, and the ever-increasing failures of the State Labor Government, I hope that Dai Le`s campaign has laid the foundation for a Liberal victory in the seat. All the best for the March 2011 candidate!
PS went to a great movie tonight, Best Enemies, about cyber bullying between teenage girls. It was amazing-so true you would swear the writer,Darren Bark, had been listening in on girls` conversations for generations. YOU HAVE TO SEE IT! |
